Knights of Prayer

Friday June 29th at 9pm-6am it is a One Voice Knights of Prayer at Clifton Parish Church.

Once again there will be praying through the night with a special emphasis on seeing the Kingdom of God come in York.

We will be praying for

  • the many churches over the city,
  • cooperation through One Voice and Churches Together,
  • the ministries and agencies based here in York and
  • real revival in our city and nation.

Why not come and join us for an hour , or two or eight?

See our map if you are not sure where Clifton Parish Church is.

On Saturday 7th July 2007 (the 7th of the 7th of the 7th) Churches Together and One Voice have decided to come together to pray. They consider it a pivotal moment in time, and a good opportunity to pray because:

- It is now 3 years since On Voice received Lydia’s prophecy

- It will be the second anniversary of the London bombings

- It is a festival day in the city of York

- it is one of those calendar moments that seems significant.

Having decided to pray we were overwhelmed by the Lord Mayor’s invitation to pray in the Guildhall.

Cross

We will therefore be meeting at 11.30am in the Guildhall to pray until 12.30pm with the civic party in attendance.

We will pray for the peace and security of our city, our nation and our world, and for the move of God in York to fulfil Lydia’s prophecy.

Come and join Churches Together and One Voice as we offer up significant prayers.

This is a very popular course of the York School of Theology in their Flat-pack series. Now for the first time it is being offered during the daytime.
Many people know about Adam and Eve, Noah, Moses, David and Goliath, Daniel and those lions, Jesus’ death and resurrection, and Paul’s journeys, but how do they all fit together and make sense as a whole?

This overview of God’s amazing collection of books is taught by Derek Wooldridge.

  1. The life of Jesus - the Gospels
  2. The Acts of the Apostles and their Letters
  3. The Books of the Law: Genesis to Deuteronomy
  4. Under the Judges and the first kings: Joshua - 2 Samuel and the Wisdom Literature
  5. Kings and More Kings: 1 Kings - 2 Chronicles and the Prophets
  6. Exile and Return: Ezra - Esther and the Later Prophets

We said a collective congratulations to James and Vicky Barton last Sunday. At 7.42am that morning Vicky gave birth to little Matthew Thomas Barton. At 8lb 4oz James said his wife “made it look easy”.

This is part 6 of the series and the subject is The Rapture.

Is this different from “Translation”? Is it distinct from the Parousia? Find out more about this particularly 20th Century doctrine by listening here.

Apologies for reduced quality this week due to technical difficulties.

Voluntary administrative support required.

York School of Theology (YST) offers a wide range of training to Christians of all churches in and around York.

After an exciting first year of operation YST is looking to grow and therefore seeks a person to commit themselves on a voluntary basis, to provide administrative support. The amount of time required is the equivalent of one or two days per week.

It is a role which can offer great satisfaction for service in a strategic area of Christian work.

For further details see the newssheet or contact us at the York Elim office.

Chihiro and her family are on their way to their new home when they stumble across an abandoned theme park. On further inspection the theme park turns out to be a magical bath house for “the spirits”. Chihiro is trapped there and forced to work in the bath house while her Mother and Father are turned into pigs. To save her parents and get back to her own world she must defeat the evil witch Yubaba. Spirited Away is a tale of trial, longing, friendship, love and magic. An utterly spell binding masterpiece of animation from Hayao Miyazaki’s Ghibli (Jiblee) Studios.

I love this film for its storyline, beautiful animation and music not because of its shinto overtones or demonology. As a christian I am instinctively drawn to the Kingdom values in things I see and read.

Spirited Away (Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi) is a typical Miyazaki creation. It stars a brave and sensible young female protagonist. This is unusual for Japan which is one of the last great bastions of chauvinism among developed countries. Japan’s birth rate has been below replacement level for 26 years straight. This is partly because Japanese women now have the same educational opportunities as men. They quite rightly don’t want to give up high flying careers to become submissive, child bearing house wives. Recently LDP Policy Minister Syoichi Nakagawa lamented this “Women have their proper place: they should be womanly. They have their own abilities and these should be fully exercised, for example in flower arranging, sewing, or cooking. It’s not a matter of good or bad, but we need to accept reality that men and women are genetically different.” This was in 2007!

Usually if a female takes the lead role in an anime she is ultra-feminine and naive with a voluptuous figure. But Miyazaki’s animes have a little more depth. As well as honouring women, he’s pro environment and anti-materialist. Not to mention his fathomless imagination and breathtakingly beautiful animation. Read more »

If you are wanting to borrow for something special you may be tempted to accept the offer of easy loans from doorstep sales reps. DON’T!

Provident Personal Credit are often found offering their services in lower income areas and sell door to door. Borrow from them and you are bonkers! They charge interest at 177% interest.

That’s right 177%! It is something I think should be outlawed.

A far better option for those in York is to apply to the York Credit Union which works with Citizens Advice Bureau in York. They check that any borrowing applied for is affordable, but that should be welcomed because they believe in responsible lending. It costs £1 to join.

I met Mike Beckett of Citizens Advice and York Credit Union in the York Guildhall today at a Carers Day (part of a National Carers Week) I went away with a bundle of info.

York Credit Union is a great way to save too. You can start saving with a minimum payment of only £1. They even have a special Christmas Saver Account. By saving with them you are able to support the credit union’s work of protecting the vulnerable from being exploited and taken into unmanageable debt by unscrupulous lenders.

To pay back your loan some York employers have an arrangement with the Credit Union to have the payments made directly from your pay.

Have a look at their site for more info.
