Special request for prayer for Nigeria 13th December 2007

This email was sent to the church office this morning from Elim International Missions:

NIGERIA

This is a special request for prayer for Elim in Nigeria.

We have just been told that the Elim church in Bauchi, the first Elim church and the largest, has been burnt down by Muslims with everything inside. Thankfully all the church members are safe and also the schools (nursery, primary and secondary) which are a quarter of a mile away from the church. We understand that when trying to stabilise the situation, the police shot and killed the Muslim leader of the riot.

Matthew Ayodele, the President of Elim Nigeria, has moved from the area for safety as have many of the church members.

Please pray that God will surround our Elim leaders in Nigeria, the Bauchi church congregation and the schools with His protection. Pray that this terrible incident will not lead to further uprising. Pray that Matthew and the other leaders will have guidance and wisdom in everything they do.

We really appreciate your continued prayer support, thank you.

Please feel free to copy and distribute Prayerline.

If you do not wish to receive this mailing any longer,

please contact Kathy on kcooper@elimhq.net

Sermon 25th Nov ’07, (Luc Favre – guest speaker)

Luc pastors an Elim church near Lake Geneva, in France. The recording volume is a bit low for the first minute or so but the volume does go up so you can hear this inspiring sermon on the theme of “passion”.

Breakfast with the Lord Mayor

Steve Redman did such a good job at reviewing this event on the One Voice website I won’t bother reinventing the wheel and just redirect you there! I have added some text from the City Council website here just to give you a bit of info about the office of Lord Mayor. Enjoy!

The Lord Mayor is Chairman of City of York Council and the first citizen of the city. It’s an appointment made by the council each year in May, at the same time appointing a Sheriff, the city’s other civic head. York’s Lord Mayor is second only to the Lord Mayor of London in precedence and its Sheriff holds the oldest office of Sheriff in England and Wales.

The Lord Mayor chairs meetings of full council and together with the Sheriff, represents the city on ceremonial occasions, welcomes international visitors and attends events organised by local people and community groups.

The Lord Mayor also hosts formal and informal functions at the Mansion House which is the Lord Mayor’s residence during their year of office. The Mansion House is also available for tours and private hire.

Indian Church Lunch

Praise God for another fantastic International Church Lunch! I think I speak for all who were there when I say I was blown away by the quality and variety of Indian Cuisine provided by our Indian brothers and sisters. Perhaps we could ask them to do us an Indian Church Lunch every month?? Well maybe not but we’ll look forward to next month’s theme scheduled for the 2nd December, East Asia.

Thank the Lord for providing Soul and Bissy with a new job in Clyde Bank, Glasgow. We pray that He will watch over and bless them both.

Humorous (yet worrying) Animation about Mormon Beliefs

Our very own pastor was raised a Mormon and can verify that the information in this animation is an accurate portrayal of Mormon beliefs, although some of it is kept secret from their members until they reach a certain level of Mormonism.

African Church Lunch

For the past year or so, on the first Sunday of every month we’ve been having free Church Lunches and a Wesley Owen book stall. This has proved to be a popular combination. For the first four church lunches of the new academic calender we decided to have themes that reflected the different ethnic groups represented in our church. Last Sunday we kicked things off with and an African church lunch. We had folk from: Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria and Zimbabwe. The African cuisine went down a treat and all in all it was a lovely afternoon! Look out for our next Church Lunch on Sunday 4th November, it’ll be Indian!

Wedding Photos of Zoë

This time it is my daughter Zoë who has her news featured here as someone who went out from this church to pursue her adventures.

Zoë married Jonathan Joyce on 31 August in Neath, South Wales. She met him at Fraisthorpe Camp when he was one of the youth leaders there. After her time at Reading University she moved to Wales to be near him. He’s great, they are so well suited.

Thank you to all who prayed for the event. It went really well with good weather. The car carrying the bride’s maids broke down but that was after the ceremony and on the way to the reception so it was not too bad.

To see the official photos go to this link. The photographer was very good and worked so hard. You may notice that the first photos were taken at the start of the day and she was still working in the evening when it was dark.

Visit of Chris Wright

Every now and again some of the graduates who spent many years with us while they were at university, drop in and tell us how they’re doing. It’s especially good when some of them recognise a special calling on their lives.

Chris (2002-2006, including his year working in Germany) has spent the last year finding his feet. He was offered a very good and well paid secular job while he was in Australia! But he didn’t accept it because he believes that God is calling him into full time ministry. He’ll spend some time in the UK now while he looks for a Bible College to study at.

Pray for Chris, that God’s guidance will be clear to him.

Prophetic Ministry in Oman

A Christian predicted the Oman floods through “prophecy” the gift (ability given) of the Holy Spirit.

I have had more news about these extraordinary events in Oman and Cyclone Gonu through Saji, one of our church members.

Celebrating with Chin and Barbara

It is not long ago that we said goodbye to Chin who returned to Nigeria after completing her studies here. So it was a delight to see her return with daughter, Zim for her graduation ceremony (MA in Social Policy).

It was great to hear your true-life story in church this morning of God’s faithfulness .

In our local newspaper Chin’s name was printed in full and went over two lines. In case you are wondering it is Chineze Uzoamaka Gbenga Oluwatoye!

Some friends gathered for a meal on Friday 13th July to celebrate with Chin and Barbara Badu who was also celebrating her MA in Environmental Economics.
